Research Title: Validation of Racial / Gender Bias Attribution Test

IRB Approval Number: 12-204
DESCRIPTION OF THE RESEARCH: You are invited to participate in a research study to help understand the way people think racism and sexism function. I have developed a test that lets us see certain kinds of differences in how people understand bias. You will be asked to read a series of short vignettes, each of which has four possible explanations. You will be matching each explanation to one of four conceptual categories. This will let me see whether my questions successfully express the ideas behind them, or whether I need to revise my assessment. You will also be asked to provide some basic demographic information. The research will be conducted online using the site SurveyMonkey.

RISKS AND BENEFITS: The risks of this study are minimal, the same as you might encounter reading stories of people's everyday experiences online. There are no direct benefits to this study. You may exit the study at any time by closing your browser window.

DATA STORAGE TO PROTECT CONFIDENTIALITY: The survey is completely anonymous. I will never collect any personally identifying information about you. I will keep the digital data from this project in a password-protected folder, and keep any printouts in a locked filing cabinet. I will only be reporting data about the group's performance as a whole – never an individual's information.

TIME INVOLVEMENT: Your participation will take approximately thirty minutes.

HOW WILL RESULTS BE USED: The results of the study will be used to evaluate whether the survey can be used to do further research on racism and sexism. The data will be presented as part of my dissertation research, shared at academic conferences, and published in academic journals. However, no individual data will ever be released – only statistical aggregates and analyses.
