About the Session

Date: Wednesday, July 13th, 2016
Time: 6:30p-8:30pET
Location: National Council for Behavioral Health, 1400 K St NW, Suite 400, Washington, D.C.

Description: Multiple high-quality studies document the overwhelming importance of the therapeutic alliance between practitioners and the persons they serve. The quality of the therapeutic, or working, alliance has a greater effect on treatment outcomes than does the type of therapy; this meaningful effect is consistent across a variety of populations and modalities, including individual, couples, family, child and adolescent psychotherapy, and medication adherence. This is an opportunity to participate in shaping a new SAMHSA-sponsored training curriculum designed to help practitioners improve their skills in building and improving their therapeutic alliances with the people they serve.

Learning Objectives:

At the end of the course participants will be able to:

•   Discuss the significance of the therapeutic alliance and the role of empathy
•   Articulate at least five core elements for creating a strong therapeutic alliance
•   Demonstrate the evidence-based practices and skills shown to strengthen the therapeutic alliance
•   Identify evidence-based ways to work through challenges to the therapeutic alliance
•   Explain and demonstrate culturally appropriate methods of strengthening the therapeutic alliance
•   Identify at least three tools and methods for assessing the quality of the therapeutic alliance.
